How to Tell a Real Citrine Bracelet From Burnt Amethyst

A client sent me a photo last month of a citrine bracelet she had paid ₹2,400 for. Vivid orange, every bead identical, glowing like a traffic cone.
It was amethyst. Baked.
What actually happens
Amethyst and citrine are both quartz. Heat amethyst to somewhere around 470°C and the iron inside it changes state, and the purple turns yellow-orange. It is not a scam invented for jewellery — it is a legitimate treatment, and treated stone is sold openly in the trade.
The problem is what happens after that, when it reaches a marketplace listing and gets called natural citrine at four times the price.
Four checks, no equipment
1. The colour is too loud
Real citrine is disappointing at first. Pale, smoky, honeyed — closer to weak tea than to orange juice. Heat-treated amethyst is vivid, saturated, almost neon. If the photo made you think “wow” before you thought “nice”, be careful.
2. Look at where the colour sits
Burnt amethyst usually carries its colour in concentrated zones, often strongest at the tips of each bead, with white or near-clear patches behind. Natural citrine tends to be more evenly, more weakly coloured through the whole bead.
3. The beads match too well
Eighteen natural beads cut from the same material will still not agree with each other. There will be a paler one, a slightly cloudier one, one with a visible inclusion. Perfect uniformity at ₹250 means glass or resin, not stone.
4. Ask for the lab report
This is the check that ends the conversation. A seller with certified stock will send it without hesitation. A seller without one will explain why certificates do not matter, or change the subject to energy.
Does treated citrine still work?
This is the question I actually get asked, and the honest answer is that opinions differ among practitioners. My own position: I recommend natural stone in readings, and that is what we stock. Not because treated quartz is worthless, but because if you are paying for citrine you should receive citrine, and because a remedy you privately doubt is a remedy that will not hold.
